Klaus (70 years old)

You are doing an emergency home visit to Klaus, a 70-year-old man who lives alone, treated for hypertension and heart failure, whose SARS-CoV-2 PCR test was positive 6 days before.
Initially, he had a sore throat, dry cough and muscle pain which you treated with paracetamol and cough mixture.
You have spoken to him on the phone every 2 days to monitor his symptoms. He has developed fever, chest pain and productive cough and feels weak.
He wants to know what to do now. On examination, he looks worried and says his sputum is a yellowish-green.

Your findings are:

  • Temperature 38.6 °C
  • Blood pressure 160/95 mmHg
  • Heart rate 105 bpm
  • SpO2 91%
  • Respiratory rate 26/min
  • Auscultation of rales
  • Bronchial breathing at the base of the right lung

There are no signs of respiratory distress.
